April 14, 1912 — 9:00 PM

First Officer Murdoch: Captain, we've received multiple ice warnings today from other ships

Captain Smith: Noted. What's our current speed?

First Officer Murdoch: 22.5 knots

Captain Smith: Maintain speed. White Star wants us in New York on schedule.👍

Second Officer Lightoller: Sir, the Mesaba just radioed. Large icebergs directly in our path.

Captain Smith: The sea is calm and the lookouts are posted. We'll see anything in time.

Second Officer Lightoller: The lookouts don't have binoculars

Captain Smith: What? Why not?

Second Officer Lightoller: The key to the binocular cabinet was never transferred when the officers changed before departure👀

Captain Smith: We don't have binoculars because someone lost a key.

Second Officer Lightoller: Correct sir

Captain Smith: Fine. It's a clear night. They'll spot anything visually.

11:39 PM

First Officer Murdoch: ICEBERG RIGHT AHEAD

First Officer Murdoch: I've ordered hard to starboard and full reverse

Captain Smith: How close

First Officer Murdoch: We've struck it. Starboard side.

First Officer Murdoch: It scraped along the hull below the waterline

Captain Smith: Damage?

First Officer Murdoch: Unknown. Getting Thomas Andrews down to inspect.

April 15 — 12:00 AM

Thomas Andrews: Captain, I've inspected the damage.

Thomas Andrews: The first five compartments are flooding.

Captain Smith: She can float with four flooded. Five is manageable surely?

Thomas Andrews: No sir. She can float with four. Not five. As the bow sinks, water will pour over each bulkhead into the next compartment. One after another.

Captain Smith: How long do we have

Thomas Andrews: An hour. Two at most.

Thomas Andrews: Captain, this ship is going to sink. It is a mathematical certainty.

Captain Smith: How many aboard?

Thomas Andrews: 2,200 roughly

Captain Smith: And lifeboat capacity?

Thomas Andrews: 1,178

Captain Smith: That can't be right

Thomas Andrews: I designed this ship, Captain. We were only required to carry 16 boats. I wanted more. The board said it would clutter the deck.

Thomas Andrews: They said the ship was its own lifeboat.😔

Captain Smith: Begin loading the lifeboats. Women and children first.

Captain Smith: And send the distress signal. Immediately.

12:25 AM

Radio Officer Phillips: Captain, the Carpathia has responded. She's coming at full speed.

Captain Smith: How far

Radio Officer Phillips: 58 miles. Four hours away.

Captain Smith: We don't have four hours.

Radio Officer Phillips: There's a ship on the horizon. We can see her lights. The Californian maybe. She's not responding to radio.

Captain Smith: Fire the rockets. She has to see us.

First Officer Murdoch: Rockets fired sir. No response from the ship.

First Officer Murdoch: She's just sitting there.

1:15 AM

Second Officer Lightoller: The first boats went out half empty. People don't believe the ship is sinking.

Second Officer Lightoller: Boat 1 went out with 12 people. It holds 40.

Thomas Andrews: I've been going cabin to cabin telling people to put on their lifebelts and get to the boats.

Thomas Andrews: I found a couple sitting in their room with belts off. They said they'd rather go down with the ship than get in a small boat in the dark.

Captain Smith: The bow is underwater now. They'll believe it soon.

2:05 AM

First Officer Murdoch: All boats launched.

First Officer Murdoch: There are still over a thousand people on board.

Thomas Andrews: The band is still playing.❤️
