November 9, 1989 — 5:30 PM

Egon Krenz: Günter, we're issuing new travel regulations at the press conference tonight. East Germans can apply for permits to cross the border.

Günter Schabowski: Ok when do these go into effect?

Egon Krenz: We're still finalizing details. Just announce the regulations exist.

Günter Schabowski: You're sending me to a press conference without knowing when the policy starts?

Egon Krenz: It'll be fine. Just read the statement.

6:53 PM — Live Press Conference

Günter Schabowski: So I read the statement.

Egon Krenz: Good.

Günter Schabowski: Then a reporter asked when it takes effect.

Egon Krenz: What did you say?

Günter Schabowski: I looked at the paper. It didn't say.

Egon Krenz: So what did you say.

Günter Schabowski: Immediately.

Egon Krenz: You said WHAT

Günter Schabowski: He put me on the spot! I panicked! The paper said 'without delay' so I said immediately!

Egon Krenz: THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO MEAN AFTER AN APPLICATION PROCESS

Günter Schabowski: WELL MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT😡

8:00 PM

Border Guard Commander: Comrade Krenz. There are hundreds of people at the Bornholmer Street checkpoint. They say the wall is open.

Egon Krenz: It's NOT open. Tell them to go home.

Border Guard Commander: There are THOUSANDS now.😮

Egon Krenz: Hold the line. I'll get clarification from Moscow.

9:00 PM

Border Guard Commander: There are tens of thousands of people. They're chanting. They're not going home.

Border Guard Commander: My men are asking for orders. Do we use force?

Egon Krenz: NO. Absolutely no force.

Border Guard Commander: Then what do I do with 20,000 people demanding to cross?

11:30 PM

Border Guard Commander: I've opened the gate.

Egon Krenz: On whose authority??

Border Guard Commander: On nobody's authority. The crowd was going to push through regardless. I wasn't going to order my men to shoot.

Border Guard Commander: People are streaming across. They're crying. Strangers are hugging each other.

Border Guard Commander: Someone just handed flowers to my guards.❤️

Günter Schabowski: Are you watching the TV? Every checkpoint is opening.

Günter Schabowski: People are climbing on top of the wall with hammers.

Egon Krenz: I see it.

Günter Schabowski: Egon

Günter Schabowski: I think I accidentally ended the Cold War
